Meet our Summer Intern, Krista Watson

Michael Katz

Learn more about our summer intern, Krista Watson.

1. Where do you go to school and what are you studying?

I’m a rising senior at Loyola University Chicago studying public relations with a minor in global and international studies.

2. What do you enjoy most about interning at CooperKatz?

I really feel like an integral member of the teams I’m on. I started mid-May and dove right in assisting various account teams with projects. Since then, I’ve been gaining valuable, hands-on experience that I’m convinced I wouldn’t be getting anywhere else.

3. Is there anything you’ve learned from your internship about working in the PR industry that you weren’t expecting or that has surprised you?

Multi-tasking has taken on a whole new meaning for me.  You always hear about how important the ability to multi-task is, but it doesn’t really sink in until you have six assignments for three different account teams with tight deadlines to complete. That said, having tight deadlines and multiple projects has helped me better understand what to prioritize and how to manage my time well.

4. What is the best class you’ve ever taken and why did you love it?

It’s a tie between Communications and New Media and Public Service Communications. I enjoyed these because 1) I had great professors for both classes and 2) each class tied course material to current events and news. I think too often course material sticks strictly to textbooks, but in an industry that’s always changing and advancing that doesn’t work. These classes taught me how to apply what I was learning to real-world situations.

5. Any advice for future CK interns?

Be a sponge. Now is your time to learn and absorb as much as you can about the industry before starting a full-time position. Ask questions and offer thoughtful opinions on client- or industry-related content. Your teams will appreciate your thoughts and feedback.
