ANA ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD
JOHN D. Hayes of American Express Elected Chairman

October 14, 2000, Dana Point, CA–John D. Hayes, executive vice president of global advertising, American Express Company, was elected chairman of the board of the Association of National Advertisers at its Annual Conference held at The Ritz-Carlton in Dana Point, California. He succeeds Joseph V. Tripodi, chief marketing officer of The Seagram Spirits and Wine Group, Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc.

Dawn Hudson, senior vice president, strategy and marketing, PepsiCo, Inc., was elected vice-chair of ANA’s Board. James D. Speros, national director, external communications, Ernst & Young, will serve as ANA’s treasurer.

In announcing the new board officers, John J. Sarsen, Jr., ANA’s president and chief executive officer, said, "As we face the enormous challenges associated with marketing and the Internet, we have excellent board leadership to carry on our mission to help our members build their businesses by building their brands in the New Economy."

Mr. Hayes brings broad and varied marketing experience to his new role at the ANA. His vision extends to a wide range of branding issues, all of which are relevant to ANA programs. At American Express, he is responsible for brand management and advertising across the corporation, overseeing creative development, media strategy and marketing research. In addition, Mr. Hayes is a member of the American Express Planning and Policy Committee.

Prior to joining American Express, Mr. Hayes was President of Lowe & Partners/SMS. He also held senior positions at Geer DuBois, Ammirati & Puris and Saatchi & Saatchi Compton. During his career, he has developed advertising campaigns for Citibank, Aetna, Prudential Insurance, RJR Nabisco, Jaguar and Reebok. He holds a B.A. in marketing and communications from Seton Hall University and lives in Allendale, New Jersey, with wife and children.

I am looking forward to helping the association continue to develop best practices and extend its brand-building initiatives next year," said Hayes.
