Meet the CooperKatz Summer Intern: Dan Cooper

Dan Cooper, a rising senior at Cornell University, is interning at CooperKatz this summer! Learn about his studies, post-graduation plans, who he would take to dinner if he could choose anyone in the world and more in our latest blog post.

Dan Cooper

Cornell University, Class of 2017

What do you study?

English with a minor in film.

What is the best class you’ve ever taken, and why did you love it?

Hmmm, that’s tough! I think my favorite class was actually not related to English at all; freshman year I took a course called “History of Exploration, Land, Sea and Space.” It was taught by a professor, Steven Squyres, who had previously been in charge of the Mars Spirit and Opportunity rovers. His enthusiasm for the subject was contagious; it was amazing to be taught by a professor with such a wealth of experience. I learned from that course that the best classes are those where professors are genuinely passionate and effective in imparting their knowledge.

I’ve also loved creative writing courses, which have given me free reign to craft short stories about topics of my choice. There’s a real joy in creating something that one has a sense of pride in.

Why did you decide to intern in the PR industry?

I’ve always been passionate about writing, and I’ve realized recently that I really value clarity and succinctness in this discipline. I think PR requires these attributes and will help me to hone my skills.

What are you liking best about CooperKatz?

I think CooperKatz has an amazing culture. From the few days that I’ve been here I can tell that employees are genuinely friends and enjoy spending time with one another, both in and out of the office (I never thought I’d work at an agency where employees create brackets for The Bachelorette together). I think this is a unique work environment, and one that I’m proud to be a part of.

What are your plans after graduation?

Still in the process of figuring that out! I’m passionate about screenwriting, but only time will tell if that’s a career or just a hobby. I’m graduating a semester early, so there’s still some time to get my life in order. PR is certainly an appealing option.

Any fun facts about yourself that you’d like to share?

I was obsessed with Harry Potter as a child, and have read the entire series through seven or eight times. I once read the books in reverse order to watch Harry grow younger.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would you have dinner with and why?

I’m a huge fan of the sitcoms Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm; I think I would choose Larry David, the creator of both series. I’m curious whether he’s as ridiculous as the characters he portrays on television. At the very least it would be an entertaining meal.
